News from the National

As owners of a Welsh breed I hope you will all make your feelings known about the Welsh Government’s very strangely worded proposals regarding ‘exhibition animals’. If taken literally they could make it very hard for any of us, wherever we live, to take dogs to shows in Wales.

The Kennel Club’s warning about this has been well publicised on Facebook so make sure you have your say before the consultation closes.

Many congratulations to Pat Maddox on her recent ninetieth birthday. Pat has been a familiar figure at ringside for several decades and of course has always supported Teresa’s showing in every possible way.

Driffield doesn’t have CCs for Pems but it proved a good show anyway for the breed.

Our judge was Sally Duffin (Longdorham Old English Sheepdogs) and she gave BOB to Tracy and Kath Irving’s Hungarian boy Ch Born To Be Your Salt Dog at Twinan (Hung/Rom/Greek G/Mac Ch Born To Be Your Spartacus at Pi Et Ra ex Int/Rom Ch Twinan Colour Me Red), who went on to G3 under Richard Kinsey.

They also took BB with Twinan Tight Squeeze (two CCs, Twinan Dip Yer Butty ex Debsanna’s Promises Twinan), while Twinan Shake The Tree won the junior bitch stakes (plus £75!) under Lynne Salt.

Hilary and Ray Wyer took both reserves with Cottivy Skyfall (Ir Ch Chawton Dream Maker ex Cottivy Maggie May) and Creslow Melody Maker at Cottivy (Can Ch Curig FaerieTale Jupiterrising ex Creslow Dawn To Dusk).

BV was Lol and John Boulton’s Ch Jonloran Sweet Juliet (Jonloran King Of Clubs ex Elessar Chance That with Jonloran) and best beginner Mrs Smith’s Ryslip Jaffacake (Merthyr Wanda-Win The Toss for Ryslip ex Craigycor Let It Go).

Nicki and Chris Blance’s Penliath Bill Me Later (one CC, Am/NZ Ch Coventry Esquire ex Ch Penliath Femme Fatale) was BP and Richard made her second in the puppy group. For the second week she had to return on the final day, this time because she topped the day’s heat of the puppy stakes judged by Fran Kaye.

Pleased to say that all the candidates (some from Pems, some from Cardis and some from other breeds) who attended the breed appreciation day last weekend passed the multiple choice test. Thanks to breed education co-ordinator Cerys Davies and team for organising the day and to those who brought along dogs for the candidates to go over, in particular Mary Davies and Amanda Rees whose Benji and Flora patiently helped me demonstrate the Standard points.

Sad to hear that the Rees family have lost their handsome tri Ch Stadwen Silly Billy at almost 15 years. By Ch Evancoyd Conciliate ex Stadwen May Queen, he was litter brother to Ch Stadwen Cherry Blossom. His show career included a Crufts CC.

He had a remarkable record as a stud dog from siring just two litters, both for the home kennel. The first (ex his aunt Ch S Flower Of May) produced Ch S Dandy Man and S Tosca, dam of Ch S Spartakus, Ch S Floria and S Prima Donna). The second, out of his granddaughter Floria, was the record-breaking litter which included three champions, S Flora, Florence and Ivanhoe, and dual CC winner Sirocco.

I didn’t see any UK faces on the excellent video coverage of the PWCCA National, held this year near Chicago. The first few days saw the tracking, agility, herding, rally and obedience competitions and the conformation judging began on Wednesday with the sweepstakes judged by Ellen Schusterson (Jorash). I for one envied her some gorgeous youngsters to go over, judging by what I saw on the live stream.

Both her main winners came from the youngest classes, six to nine months, top spot going to the tri bitch Sundance Dirty Martini at Duet, owned by Annie Balotti-Paleen and bred by Lisa and Debbie Price by Ch Sundance Gangster Of Love ex Ch Lionhart’s Your So Vain..

BOS was the tri dog Lionhart’s Party Crasher (Ch Afara Calico Pony ex GCh Lionhart’s Cameo Appearance), owned and bred by Dan Hartman, Debbie Royster, Judy Manley and Kara Janiszak. Cameo Appearance is also dam of Your So Vain so a satisfying day for the Lionhart team.

This was followed by the veteran sweeps with best going to a past National winner in nine-year-old GChP Aubrey’s Moon River (GCh Heartsong Brynlea Pavarotti ex Ch Aubrey’s From This Moment), owned by Cindy and Vince Savioli and bred by them with Roberta Lord.

BOS was eight-year-old GChP Riverside Xtra Style (Ch Riverside Xtra Ordinary ex GCh Riverside Comet Zone), owners Patricia Panzarella and Deb Shindle, bred by Deb with Mary Fine.

Thursday saw the regular classes for dogs, judged by Norway’s Leif-Herman Wilberg (Siggen). His two main winners came from the bred by exhibitor class, WD going to a Canadian visitor in the tricolour Can Ch Curig Jedi Master (Can GCh Curig FaerieTale Highland Heir ex Can GCh Curig FaerieTale Just Kissed), owned and bred by Juliana and Barb Du Pree.

Reserve was XIV Karat Right Place at The Right Time (GChS XIV Karat Special Place In My Heart at Brigadoon CGC ex GCh Graceland XIV Happy Birthday Mr President), bred by Sherri Hurst and co-owned by her with Russell Allen and Jason Klawinski.

The bitch classes on Friday gave Patty Gailey (Triad) a full day’s work. Both Leif and Patty have judged at the League show in the UK and Leif has done Crufts.

Patty’s WB was again from the BBE class, Janet Bodin and Yolanda Lininger’s homebred tri Peri Lane Linincorgi Highway Star (GCh Double G’s Linincorgi Adele’s The Eleventh Day ex GCh Double G’s Catamarans That Kind Of Girl who was the National BOB in 2016 under Liz Cartledge).

Reserve was from open, Nancy Oehlhof and Dorothy Sanford’s Springmill BigCypress Southern Belle (bred by Dorothy by Big Cypress Whistle Blower ex Ch Big Cypress Graceland Baileys On The Rocks). I believe both the reserve winners became champions on the day, the National being the only show where points are awarded to the reserves as well as to the Winners.

On to the climax of the show on the Sunday and after the junior handling classes (won by Laci Marie Peterson), Leif had the pleasure of going over the 82 Pems in the best of breed competitions, the champion ‘specials’ plus the Winners dog and bitch, four veteran class winners and two herding titled class winners. He certainly seemed to be enjoying it to the full.

Eventually, after three cuts, it was down to the final few and the big rosette went to Bill Shelton handling GChS Coventry Good Vibrations whom he co-owns with Deborah Salow, Judy Johnson and Beckie Williams. She was bred by Bill, Beckie and Deborah plus Steve Leyerly and is by Argentine-bred Ch Alenclaud Tony Ash ex GChB Coventry Swinging On A Star.

‘Dottie’ has has a great year in both specialty and all-breed rings and at the last count was ranked number 12 of all breeds in the US. She was select bitch at last year’s National under Andy Carter and AOM 2017 under Anne Bowes. This is the team’s second National BOB, winning in 2014 with GCh Coventry Just A Little Crush under Tim Mathiesen.

BOS was one of the veterans, Yolanda Lininger’s nine-year-old homebred GCh Linincorgi’s Livin’ On A Prayer (Ch Rosewood Brigantine ex the 2011 BOB Ch Linincorgi Northwynd Everlasting), who also took BV.

This is ‘Zachary’s’ third BOS at the National, following 2014 under Tim and 2013 under John Burgess. He also took AOM in 2017 and 2015.

His granddaughter Highway Star was best of winners and best BBE, making four consecutive generations for Yolanda who have won BOB, BOS or BOW at the National, a remarkable record.

Select (runner-up) in males went to Tim Mathiesen and Tomm Dedini’s homebred tri Ch Nebriowa Johnnie Walker (GCh Rosewood Sea Quest ex Nebriowa Georgianna).

In bitches the select was another evergreen veteran, Moon River who had also won the veteran sweeps She was the National BOB in 2013 under John, AOM 2017, select 2015, 2014 and 2012, and her sire Pavarotti was BOS in 2010.

The young Party Crasher made it a nice double by winning best puppy.

Awards of merit went to the bitches: GChB Brogan Bright Light (AOM 2018, select 2017, BOW 2016, by GChB Heritage Brogan Light The Lamp ex GCh Brogan Tralee); Ch XIV Karat Come Sail Away With Me to Brigadoon (Ch Byendebrok Tiddlywinks ex Ch XIV Karat Cook’n Up Something Special); the multi-talented Ch Tri-umph Tabledancer HT NJP CAA ACT2 RATN (by last year’s BOB GCh Eweknow Hearts Run Free ex GCh Tri-umph Tiger Lily); and Ch Coventry Music Of The Night (GCh Martindale Black Bart ex Ch Alenclaud Vicenta).

And the dogs: Ch Sandfox Golden Whistler (BP 2015, grandsire of RWB, by Dwynella Made By Design ex Ch Sandfox Destiny); Ch Rosewood Sea Quest (AOM in 2018, WD 2016, sire of select dog and grandsire of BOW, another by Black Bart and ex GCh Rosewood Sea Shell); GChS Springmill A Blast From The Past (select 2018, AOM 2017, by GCh Springmill Sweet Talkin Guy ex GCh Springmill Dec Th’Halls); GChS Lionhart’s All About Harry (yet again by Black Bart and another ex GCh Lionhart’s Cameo Appearance); and Korean visitor, the World Show BIS Ch/Multi Ch Realline Final Boss (GCh Balmy Winds JP Jake ex The Goodboy Lovely Catherine) who was RWD last year.

That’s plenty for this week so I’ll look more closely at the breeding of some of the winners next time.

If any of you happen to take Our Dogs, please note that some of the breed notes in the latest edition appear under the Whippet heading.
