Goodbye to a show ring star

Good to see rather more puppies in the ring at City of Birmingham than has often been the case of late.

Our judge was Karen Gilliland (Castleavery Swedish Vallhunds) and her BOB with a fourth CC was Nicki and Chris Blance, Bill Shelton and Steve Leyerly’s Ch Penliath Sent From Coventry (Am Ch Ninacorte Chicago Hope ex Coventry Dancing With The Stars for Penliath). Incidentally I see the Coventry team recently won RBIS at the prestigious Santa Barbara show in California with Ch Coventry Good Vibrations.

Karen’s dog CC, his ninth, went to Lorraine Weedall and Nicola Bogue’s Ch Bronabay Cannonball (Ch Pemcader Belroyd Zeus ex Ch Bronabay Cherish The Moment).

RDCC was Yana Vengre Vengerova’s Rus/Swiss/Lux Ch Aethwy Piano Man (one CC, Ch/Rus/Ukr Ch Ermyn Snow Knight ex Int/Rus Ch Aethwy Free As A Bird), and RBCC Barry and Sue Coulson’s Ch Woodhenge Star Xtravaganza (Ch/Ir Ch Craigycor Lightning Bolt ex Ch Woodhenge Star Maiden).

It was another BP for Sue Harrison’s bobtail tri Haresfoot Danny Boy (Towernaglen Red Dragon with Ceranda ex Haresfoot Zena), and the umpteenth BV for Mary Davies’ tri Snow Knight (Ch/Am Ch Rosewood Set Sail for Salvenik ex Wharrytons Pansy Potter at Ermyn).

This show schedules a best junior and we had a representative in Sunday’s big ring finales after Tracy and Kath Irving’s Twinan Shake The Tree (Twinan Dip Yer Butty ex Twinan Just The Ticket) went on to top the junior group under Patsy Hollings.

The ever-versatile Meitza Erik The King upgraded his Good Citizen status to silver.

So sorry to hear of the death of one of the most successful Pems of his era, Teresa Maddox’s Ch Salvenik Star Made. ‘Jimmy’ was nearly 16 and by Ch Twinan Custom Made ex Salvenik Stars In Your Eyes.

He enjoyed a long show career, going from a Pup of the Year heat to many veteran wins including two of his 25 CCs. He won the Leslie Perrins Trophy for leading Pem in 2009 and ’10, and placed in the group 11 times.

He went on to prove equally successful at stud, winning top stud dog awards three times. His progeny include five champion daughters, Bronabay Cherish The Moment, Ellhar Luminos, Corgwood Inspiration, Chawton Call Me Madam at Cottivy and Chililabomwe Snowdrop, and one champion son Pemdavra Harbour Light, plus CC winners Chawton Wizard Of Oz at Cottivy and Pemskyes Quantum Leap.

Through Cherish The Moment he is grandsire of Chs B Cannonball and Troopin The Colour; through Pemdavra Pretty Pebbles at Debsanna, of Ch D Costa Lot.

I know Teresa and Pat will miss their special boy dreadfully.

The American Pembroke scene has lost Carol Ecker of the Clayview kennel, a long-standing breeder. She imported Kaytop Magic Moment in whelp to Ch Fitzdown Dorian of Deavitte. Like quite a few Pem people in the US she was a veterinary surgeon, and I believe qualified in the era when it was still fairly rare for a woman to do so.

The Polish breed club has been celebrating 40 years since Pems were introduced to the country and 30 for Cardigans. Their anniversary show was an elegant event, judging by the photos, and I’m sure a lot of effort must have been put into it.

Chari Magnan (Mapleleaf) from the US judged the Pems and her BOB was Lit Ch Mastermind Rudens Legendos (Merthyr Wanda-Do The Haka ex Ch Je Suis Kylie Minogue des Contamines), owned by Ramute Masiokaite from Lithuania, while BOS was Serenissima Casa Blanca (Daredevil’s Hunting For Compliments From Staken ex Ch Bravissima Casa Blanca), owner Blanka Żukowska from Poland.
