WELSH CORGIS, PEMBROKE
NEWS FROM A UK PERSPECTIVE
It was a shock to us all to hear of the sudden death on Monday of Laura Campion. She will be greatly missed and we all send sympathy yo her family and friends.
Over the past 25 years or so the Whitepoint affix had made a big impact in Ireland and beyond and the loss to the breed in her home country will be severe. Sadly there are now very few show breeders in the Republic and Laura and John O’Mahoney (Chawton) have in recent years kept the Pembroke flag flying.
Starting with two sisters of Ermyn lines, Laura bred three UK champions, the only Pem breeder from the Republic to do so. Ch/Ir Ch Whitepoint Dream Weaver at Craigycor had a great career for Alan and Sarah Matthews, winning two CCs and a BOB at Crufts, BIS at a group show and top Pem of the year plus many further successes at Irish shows.
Then there were Ch Whitepoint Wonderland of Llwynog and Ch Whitepoint Summer Sunshine of Llwynog, both successfully campaigned by Daniel and David Smith.
Ir Ch Whitepoint Stare If U Dare at Manto was the last top winner for Frances Toman.
Laura herself made up a number of Irish champions including Chloe Narcisse, Louisiana, Mimosa (a particularly beautiful bitch), Orlando Bloom and Sea Shell, and some of them bred on well in Europe.
Laura had awarded CCs in the UK and was a group judge under IKC rules, having officiated overseas at specialties and all-breed shows.
Her funeral mass is on Saturday March 30 at noon at St Colman’s Cathedral, Cobh. Family flowers only; donations may be made to the Renal Ward at Cork University Hospital.
