A first for a Latvian Pembroke

Karen Hewitt (Cardhew Cardigans) was our judge at Birmingham National and it proved to be a double day for Pems bred in Eastern Europe.

The bitch CC and BOB awards made a bit of history as the first in the UK for a Pem bred in Latvia. This was Ena Ellwood’s tri Amberynlea Dark Desire with Ellhar, bred by Natalya Yermakova by US-bred Am Ch Mapleleaf Wisus The Knight In Black ex Int/Lat/Lit/Est/Cz Ch Tuja Medaus Lietus. SuRe Natalya must be very proud.

The sire is a double grandson of Am Ch Mapleleaf Phaeton (a son of Ch Aberlee Bransby) and also goes back to Cordach Clooney. The dam combines Lithuanian, Polish, Norwegian and American lines.

DCC was a fourth for Tracy and Kath Irving’s Hungarian-bred Ch Born To Be Your Salt Dog at Twinan (Hung/Rom/Greek/Mac Ch Born To Be Your Spartacus di Pi Et Ra ex Int/Rom Ch Twinan Colour Me Red). They also took BP with Twinan Shake The Tree (Twinan Dip Yer Butty ex Twinan Just The Ticket) who was also second in the PB stakes under Howard Ogden.

RDCC was yet another import, Teresa Maddox’s Danish-bred Redfordhill Magic Moments to Salvenik (Dan Ch Mistycor Once Upon A Dream ex Dan Ch Vuedor Could It Be Magic). Britain was represented by the RBCC, Barry and Sue Coulson’s Ch Woodhenge Star Xtravaganza (Ch/Ir Ch Craigycor Lightning Bolt ex Ch Woodhenge Star Maiden).

Gill Legerton took BV with Ermyn Flickering Flame at Solaw (Ch/Rus/Ukr Ch Ermyn Snow Knight ex Janjinks Wild Honey at Ermyn).

Dawn Woodey’s Barawood Summer Soiace won BOB and the group at West Country Dog Club under Terrie Cousins-Brown.

The Pembroke Breed Appreciation Day (BAD) has been rearranged to September 21, at Pucklechurch near Bristol. I will be the breed speaker. Cost is £25 for seminar and exam, £15 for just the seminar.

Here’s a bit more on the background of the World Show BIS winner, Ch Realline Final Boss, from Korea.

His sire is the big winner from Japan, Int Ch Balmy Winds JP Jake who is by US-bred Ch Putnam Smartys Daily Double (Ch Honeyfox Smarty Jones ex Putnam Dazzling Encounter`) ex Int Ch Balmy Winds JP Stelltta Nina who has three American grandparents from Honeyfox, Larchmont and Nebriowa.

‘Newman’s’ dam is Int Ch The Goodboy Lovely Catherine, who has an American sire Int Ch Riverside Xtra Ordinary (Ch Aberlee Storm Force ex Ch Riverside Red Alert) and an Italian dam Int Ch Dragonjoy Fairy Of Flowers (Int Ch Redbaron ex Ch Sungiftchristabel).

Nearest UK dogs in the pedigree are Ch Shavals Fire Dynasty of Woodhenge and Ch Woodhenge Star Princess, Fairy’s granddams, both being mated to Int Ch Dragonheart, the breed’s other BIS winner at a major FCI event, the European Winner Show in Budapest 2008 when the judge was Tamás Jakkel, who is now of course FCI president.

The other Corgi to win a BIS at one of the shows on the Shanghai circuit was Int Ch Numina Kicking The Show of Jia Jia Kennel, from the host country. Both parents are from Deb Shindle’s kennel in the US, Am Ch Riverside Wicked Popular and Am Ch Riverside Play Nice. This is a half-brother to half-sister mating on Crufts BOB winner Ch Riverside Wicked Wonderful (sister of Xtra Ordinary so the two winners are quite closely related). Grandsires are Ch Riverside Very Important and Ch Aberlee Phantom Sequence.

Thanks to Piotr Mazur for discovering that another successful Pem over the Shanghai circuit was You Fei China Scally, who took a best baby puppy in show award. This one is by UK export Ch Creslow Wicked Rumour at Twinan ex Yu Fei Yecie.
