A Corgi centenary

I wondered if any of you realised the significance of this month in Pembroke (indeed Corgi) history?

Well, August 2019 marks the centenary of the publishing of the first Kennel Club registrations for the Corgi. Official registration date was in April 1919 but it is the August Kennel Gazette for that year which lists the first two names.

Of the two, we are told that the first to be registered was the bitch Rose, owned and bred by J Davies of Solva, sired by J Lloyd’s Tim out of Teddie. The other is her litter brother Casement, owned by T H Gwyther and presumably named after the Irish patriot who had been executed not long before. The were born on April 25, 1917 so were ‘war babies’.

So this was where it all started!

A year later, several of Rose’s progeny were registered: Flary, Freda, Maud, Solva Jim and Taff, born in August 1919 and sired by her brother Casement, and Solva Eliza, born in March 1920 and by J Jenkins’ Freddy.

Rose was clearly a laster for she was still in good enough form to be exhibited in the first Pembroke classes to be scheduled at Crufts in 1927, where she was second in open bitch with her granddaughter Solva Rosebud first and her daughter Phoebe third. BOB that day was her grandson Caleb ( a son of Phoebe) and he can lay claim to being the first influential stud dog of the breed’s history as a show dog.

Thank you then to Rose and to her breeder Mr Davies for taking the initiative in making the breed ‘official’.

A hundred years on and we are off to the Welsh Kennel Club where our judge was Gil Legerton (Solaw).

DCC was a first following several reserves for Teresa Maddox’s Redfordhill Magic Moments to Salvenik. He was bred in Denmark by Charlotte Wessel and is litter brother to Joy Williams’ Redfordhill Simply Magic for Vuedor who also has a CC.

They are by Russian-bred Dan Ch Mistycor Once Upon A Dream (by UK-bred Ch Salvenik Set To Star ex New Zealand-bred Rus Ch Dwynella Gimme That Look) ex UK-bred Dan Ch Vuedor Could It Be Magic (by Italian-bred Welshcorgimania Daredevil at Vuedor ex Vuedor Amazing Grace).

Magic Moments has two CC-winning daughters.

Bitch CC was a tenth for Barry and Sue Coulson’s Ch Woodhenge Star Xtravaganza (Ch/Ir Ch Craigycor Lighning Bolt ex Ch Woodhenge Star Maiden) who went on to BOB. They also bred the RDCC, Elaine and Alan Barlow’s bobtail tri Woodhenge Star Agent for Pendrell (Ch Pemcader Thunderball ex Woodhenge Moon Maiden).

RBCC went to Chris and Nicki Blance, Bill Shelton and Beckie William’s tri Ch Penliath Sent To Coventry (Am Ch Ninacorte Chicago Hope ex Coventry Dancing With The Stars for Penliath) and Chris and Nicki also took BP with Penliath Bill Me Later (Am/NZ Ch Coventry Esquire ex Ch Penliath Femme Fatale), who went on to her second PG3 award, judge Liz Cartledge.

BV was Lorraine Weedall and Nicola Bogue’s tri Ch Bronabay Troopin The Colour (Ch Highworth Northern Lights over Pendrell ex Ch Bronabay Cherish The Moment).

Ch/Rus/Ukr Ch Ermyn Snow Knight was fourth in the veteran stakes under Steve Hall, and the Balletcors third in the breeders’ competition judged by Tony Allcock.

The Pennine and Yorkshire club is again inviting an American judge for its championship show, this time Betsey Orman (Bramblyhedge) whose first CC appointment in the UK this will be. Her biography is in the schedule.

The show is on Saturday October 19 at Heywood Sports Village, West Starkey Street, Heywood, Lancashire OL10 4TW.

Afterwards, everyone is invited to join the judge and committee for a meal at the Italian Orchard, half an hour away at junction 32 of the M6.

Sorry to hear that Gavin and Lynda Parrish have lost their tri Wharrytons Borealis at Dangavlyns after a short, sudden illness. He was nine years old, by Northern Lights ex Wharrytons Kitty O’Shea, and gave them a great deal of fun in the ring.

At the PWCC of the Rockies specialty judged by Marilyn Van Vliet (Aurora) it was another BOB for Kara and Alyssa Janiszak’s GCh Sterling Shine The Light (GChS Lionhart’s All About Harry ex GCh Sundance Grace Kelly) while BOS was Carol Swinney’s veteran dog GChB Larklain Markers Eye In The Sky (Ch Larklain Rogers Magic Marker ex
